The Poetry Scene in Las Vegas: A Historical Perspective

The Nevada Poetry Society has been a major contributor to the growth of poets since its inception in 1961, founded by Mildred Breedlove. Today, Las Vegas is home to a thriving poetry scene, with events such as “Spit Your Truth” taking place on the last Saturday of each month at the Arts Factory. This event, which is open to people of all ages, began in a beauty salon and has since become a popular gathering spot for poets in the city. The Nevada Poetry Society also sponsors a statewide poetry project called “The Truth Spot”, which uses the epistolary style of writing. This project has been featured in parks and streets throughout the Las Vegas Valley, and its founder, Davis, is hoping to eventually have a permanent home for it in the center of the city.

He also plans to expand it to North Las Vegas, where a new project with residential and commercial uses is being planned for the demolished Texas Station and Fiesta Rancho sites. The intense 4th of July celebrations in Las Vegas have also been an integral part of the city's poetry scene. During this time, Vargas and Davis have performed at events held throughout the valley and even competed together on the Battleborn Slam team in a national poetry tournament last year in Atlanta. The Nevada Poetry Society has been instrumental in fostering a vibrant poetry scene in Las Vegas for over fifty years. With events like “Spit Your Truth” and “The Truth Spot”, poets from all over the city are able to come together and share their work with each other. As Las Vegas continues to grow and develop, it is likely that this vibrant poetry scene will remain strong.
